Fit Friday: My Journey to Body Positivity

Fitness Friday

*pin this picture for reference later!*

Though sometimes I’m reluctant to pull myself out of bed at 5:30 in the morning, I love to work up a good sweat first thing to start my day! I never regret it later, and I adore that burst of energy you feel once you’re done.

I’ve always been a curvy girl who has “struggled” with weight issues. I overate as a child and even though I was moderately active, the pounds kept piling on and soon I was super chunky. This is never a fun place to be when you’re friends are all skinny minis and you just don’t feel like you belong. I had a terrible relationship with food, exercise, and the scale. All I knew was good food made you fat. Exercise was this torturous thing you did to try to lose the fat. And the scale was this nasty little thing that told you how fat you were and was especially evil at the doctor’s office. Needless to say, I had a very poor self image growing up.

I would spend years on yo-yo diet after yo-yo diet. I would lose 20 only to gain 30 back. And I would berate myself every single time. Most people didn’t know just how bad my self esteem was because I have such a bubbly personality, you might have been fooled into thinking I was the most confident person in the world. But it took years of me choosing to love myself before it became a reality. It may seem silly to you, but I would make myself look in the mirror and say what I liked about myself. I would say that I didn’t believe the lie that I was ugly or fat or unloved. And then one day I woke up and I believed it! It was the most liberating feeling ever!

It was only after that realization that I could truly start to develop a healthy relationship with food and exercise. I began to learn and appreciate how food nourishes my body and how exercise is something I can enjoy and look forward to as a way to be stronger. I accepted the fact that I will probably never be a size 2 and THAT’S 100% OK! I actually have to work hard at maintaining a healthy size 10. But this is my body, curves and all, and I love it!

Now of course I won’t lie to you and act like my life is all rainbows and bunnies now. I have my moments of self doubt for sure. But I always try to remember my worth. I am more than a number on a scale. And my curves are something to be celebrated.

So now that we’ve hashed out some of the deeper moments of my life, let me break down some of my favorite workout bits that keep me moving, sweating, and alive!

1. Fabletics Leggings: These are definitely the best leggings I’ve tried thus far, and with all the fun prints, what’s not to love?! My favorite styles are the Lisette 7/8 (high waisted and cropped) and the Salar (midrise ankle length). They are opaque and thick enough to be warm during the winter but not too hot during the summer. They also help to lift and hold everything in place. Score! I always have at least 2 black pairs of Salar on rotation. Oh, and right now new members get 2 for $24!!

2. Free weights: Whether you’re using a workout DVD or a routine you found online, free weights are the way to go. They help ensure each arm is doing it’s fair share of work and they’re just so convenient for multiple types of workouts. I prefer the rubber coated ones like these. And the colors are fun!

3. Workout DVDs: I love doing my workout at home because you can literally roll out of bed and get straight to it. Or really for me, it looks more like sneaking in a workout while your newborn naps. My top two favorites are the TurboFire Base Kit and the Jillian Michaels – 30 Day Shred. TurboFire definitely is my #1 because it’s like a mix of kickboxing and zumba, and I love to dance so this is so much fun for me! I would say it almost feels like you’re not working out, but I don’t want to lie to you. You’re definitely sweating and breathing hard but totally having fun all at the same time!

4. A Good Fitting Sports Bra: If you are larger chested like me, this is an absolute must. It is the most uncomfortable thing to do high intensity workouts in an ill fitting sports bra. Definitely do yourself a favor and invest in a good one. My two favorites are the Victoria’s Secret Incredible Sports Bra and the Under Armour Eclipse High Intensity Sports Bra. Both last for a long time and hold their shape well while supporting your shape (aka no uni-b00b!).

I’ve rounded up some of my other favorites down below! That’s it! You’re all set to get out there and start moving that beautiful, curvy body!

  1. I swear by Fabatletics. So happy the company launched their plus size section. Wishing you all the best in your healthy journey. I also had to realize it’s not just a fad or phase, it’s a lifestyle, continuous.

  2. This was SO me!! I was trying so many crash diets until I decided to go to a nutritionist and lost 30 lbs (the healthy way). A lot of people dont realize losing weight quick is not the best way to do it. Good things come to those who wait 🙂

    1. Exactly! I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying your health journey in a way that’s good for your body! Congrats!
